Roofing Contractors

When it comes to choosing a reputable roofing contractor it might not be as easy as it sounds. To help you get the highest quality contractor for your next roof project we have written down some key things to ask.

Start by asking for referrals, these could come from people at work or church, in the gym or anywhere you have people around you. People are very good at sharing experiences, both good and bad. Another way is to check with your local chamber of commerce as well as the Better Business Bureau. Any reputable roofing contractor will be registered with the BBB. You are also going to want to ask if the roofing contractor is insured, but don’t stop there, ask them the amount they are insured for. Make sure the coverage is in effect through the duration of the job. Many building and home owners have been dragged into litigation involving uninsured roofing contractors. Also, if a contractor is not properly insured, you may be liable for accidents that occur on your property.

When talking to a potential roofing contractor that could be used for one of your projects, pay close attention to the attitude of the company representative. A professional roofing contractor will be happy to provide you with any info you may request. Reputable contractors take pride in their work and should be enthusiastic when faced with the challenges of helping people overcome their roofing problems.

It’s rewarding to ask the potential roofing contractor if they have a “Company Philosophy”. Many contractors take great pride in what their company represents. For example, we have great roofers, that install a premium product, but that isn’t the only thing we are about. I believe in God, family, and doing business with integrity. I believe the customer can benefit from a roofing contractor that sees the “bigger picture” in life.

Choosing a roofing contractor that doesn’t take safety serious could mean disaster for you. The last thing you need is someone to get hurt or worse yet killed while installing your roof. You need to qualify your contractor by having them show you a written safety plan. They should also have a plan specific to the site where they will be working. Ask them if all the installers are trained by OSHA and if the foreman have even more training. They should be able to tell you the last time a refresher course was taken. Usually there will be heavy equipment on sight and it’s good to know if everyone is trained to operate the machinery.

Insist on a detailed written proposal and examine if for complete descriptions of the work and specifications, including approximate starting and completion dates and payments procedures. Have the contractor explain his project supervision and quality control procedures. Request the name of the person who will be in charge of your project, how many workers will be required and estimated completion time. Carefully read and understand any roofing warranty offered and watch for provisions that would void it. You will be amazed how many warranties are void because of ponding water.

Last be skeptical about lowest bids or those considerably lower than the others written for the same work. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Many below cost bids seem attractive, but these contractors often uninsured or perform substandard work. Remember, price is only one of the criteria for selecting a roofing contractor. Professionalism, experience and quality workmanship should also weigh heavily in your decision.
